I plan on using a timing light on a 1986 e150 5.0,just wondering where the timing mark on the crank should line up to the timing bracket on the motor ,the bracket has a funny shape to it ,it also has the timing hole on the bracket, tried to clean it,but saw no numbers on the bracket or the crank,,i think i also have to unnplug the spout connector near the dist??? can anyone help me out thanks
Had the same question a couple of month ago; there is a bracket with a pointer; the degrees are on de balancer (if I remember well, only the even numbers)
Note: mine is a 5 L 1993, so with EFI
It is a pain to get at, but it can be done if you are careful; I used a mirror, as rotating bits are near.
Timing should be 10 BTDC and the spout plug should be disconnected; this one is in a two wire socket, near behind the battery; mine had 2 pink wires to that plug.
Hope this helps.
In 86 the spout will be closer to the distributor. Look right under the cowling above the it. That is usually where it is (as verified on our '88). The timing SHOULD be set a 10, if it's off I'd tune it up before changing the timing, make sure the plug gaps are correct, and the wires are good.
thanks for the info guys, will try again to look on the balancer for the timing marks I had to change the dist because the hall effect (pickup coil) went bad,had an extra dist on hand,,will have to remove the gear on the old one to get to the pickup coil,,that gear is sure a pain to get off,,,,,so when i get to 10 degrees it should be on the top point of the bracket? oh well i'll try to tune it by
ear and feel if i can't figure it out thanks again
To remove the PIP, you take off a c-clip (snap ring) and it should slide up off the shaft. I've replaced a few on an '82 (one a week until I stopped buying the wells ones).
