How to section a step bumper
I did this job a few years ago; I figured maybe someone could use the info. When I converted my '70 F100 to a stepside, the generic painted step bumper looked much too wide. Here's how to shorten it. Most aftermarket step bumpers have a diamond plate top that is welded on. Mine was welded on the inside, with welds maybe 6" apart. I ground the welds away and removed the top. I marked the bumper OUTSIDE of the mounting brackets with two parallel lines on each side for the amount I wanted to shorten it. I cut it with a saber saw, and welded the ends back on. The more carefully you measure and cut, the neater it will go back together. I cut each side of the top by the same amount I sectioned the bumper, and welded it back on from the inside. I ground off the outside welds and repainted the bumper. This makes a husky bumper with a trailer ball mount, and it is proportionate to the width of a step side. From the outside, you can't tell it was modified. If this isn't clear, I'll try to post a sketch.
