I have an 87 with a 2.9 F.I. that has started to act up when I am pulling a load, or on the interstate at 70 mph, that it acts like it starts to run out of fuel. It will slow down to about 40 mph and miss & backfire very bad for a distance and then all of a sudden it is like someone flips a switch and the miss goes away and I have full acceleration. The weird part of the problem is that when it is missing & backfiring, if I push the accelerator to the floor, I seem to get full power back(but I can't drive everywhere with it to the floor) until I leave off and the problem slowly returns and I slow down again.
ANY ideas will be greatly appreciated. I understand it has 2 fuel pumps and do not know how to figure out if one is bad or the problem is elsewhere! I hear a sort of roaring noise from near the fuel tank when it is idling.
Also it idles fine.
Thanks in advance
Jim
I also have a '87 4x4 Ranger w/2.9L and 33" Swampers and a few years ago I had a simular problem ,well then of coures it got worse. Then the truck would die every now and then and start right back after I let it sit for a minute. Turned out to be my fuel filter. It's located in front of your high pressure pump on the driver side frame ,right around your radius arm. Oh yeah ,if your low pressure pump is making a lot of racket in you tank then you may want to find a new one ,because she is about to go.

I changed the Map sensor and it helped a little but someone said to change the Oxygen sensor. I just put the new 0xygen sensor on and it cured my problem completely. I can run 75 on the interstate loaded with no problem. Hope this helps.
