Bought a used 02 F150 a while back dealer we purchased it from told me it had the tow pkg, made a inquiry to Ford about the option and they told me my vehicle did not have the pkg. The truck has the factory receiver hitch, 7 pin and 4 pin connector, 72amp battery, under dash connector for the brake controller, but not sure if it has the Trans cooler.
Where, if I have one, is the factory installed cooler located?
Tranny cooler will be up front by the radiator. In fact, it will look like a mini radiator, depending on the capacity it may be fairly big. Also, get down and look at the tranny, if there is a cooler it will have lines coming out and leading to the front of the truck.
All auto tranny's have lines going to the cooler in he radiator. The towing package will have the factory hitch, 7 & 4 pin plug, larger battery, and a tranny cooler located in front of the radiator. It is over towards the drivers side behind the grill.
Thanks,
I found it, traced the lines back from transmission. Does anyone know how efficient the factory unit is? I'm planning on towing a 5500# fully loaded trailer and want to make sure I have sufficient cooling for the trans.
can someone post a picture of the factory unit? I'm begining to suspect that I DON'T have one, even though several mechanics told me I did after a glance.
I don't have a pic of one for you, but if you trace the lines comming from the thing you suspect is the factory add-on cooler for the tow package, one line should go from the factory in-tank cooler connection in the radiator (the big one for the engine coolant) to that add-on cooler, and the other should go back to the transmission. There should only be 3 'radiators' on the truck: one for engine coolant (which also contains an internal tranny cooler inside the raditor tank), one for the air conditioning system (in front of the engine coolant radiator), and one for the tranny with the tow package (in front of everything else).
If the extra cooler doesn't go to the tranny, then it might be an aftermarket engine oil cooler, in which case you should be able to trace the lines back to the engine oil filter adaptor.
