4" steering wheel oscillation while braking

Vehicle is a 2002 F250 HD Diesel, 2WD with 50,000 miles, new tires same size as stock. While towing a 5th wheel down hill and doing some hard braking the steering wheel starts to oscillate up to 4" as if trying to turn the wheel 2" to the right then 2" to the left very quickly. This has occured over the past 20,000 miles and scares the living bejabers out of me. The brakes don't fade so I figure its not an issue with them. This has occured with the factory original tires and also with the present new tires. Since I noticed it only when I trailered I just chalked it up to some mysterious issue between the 5th wheel and the truck. (I can fix this -I'll just go down hill a little more slowly.) But just reciently I have noticed a slight oscillation occuring at times without having the 5th wheel hooked up, but only under a very light brake pressure. It occures when the brakes are very cold to when the brakes are hot. The truck stops straight and does not pull. The oscillation is not present if you brake with any significant pressure. There is no pulsing felt at the brake petal itself. Got any ideas?

Since it only happens when you're braking, it's got to have something to do with the brakes themselves. I'd check to see if you've got warped rotors.

Thanks for the suggestion and I'll put that on my list of things to check.

It will most likely be a front rotor since you can feel it in the steering wheel.

I have my second Ford Super Duty now (a 2000 and now a 2001) and both of them did that. Its warped front brake rotors......must be a characteristic failure mode on these things. The brakes are very simple to swap out, and today the new rotors and pads cost me $160 from Advance Auto.
