intake valves

I pulled off the intake tonite and looking down in the ports on the heads, the intake valve stems had quite a bit of carbon build up. What would cause carbon buildup down there? Is this normal? Jamie

Pretty normal on an older engine.

My 390 has about 10,000 miles since I had it rebuilt. Should the carbon buildup have happened that fast or could I have a problem that contributed to it? Thanks

The crap they call gasoline is the major contributor to your problem. Until they stop charging us $2 a gallon for the worst fuel in the history of this country we will continue to have this problem.

intake carbon, oil coking?

Do you have intake valve seals or umbrellas? If high miles the umbrellas are hard and in pieces in your sump. Without top end oil restrictors you may be flooding the stems besides intake fuel coking the back of the valve. Worn guides, weight of oil, plugged drain back holes from umbrella pieces? One or a combination of faults. Carl......o&o>...............
