I brought my 2001 ford escape in for that tranny problem with the shuttering they told me that because of the recall the one that they had to reflash the chip for that the calibration was raised therefore caused my tranny fluid to get fouled so they did a complete tranny flush and so far there hasnt been any occurences yet but they told me if it happens again there going to change my tourque conveter ... anyone have any input on this im concerned about possible long term problems ? .
The CD4E has been the weak link in the Escapes (especially the 2001 model) be sure to flush the trannie every 30,000 miles, and don't drive in overdrive around town at speeds below 45. The converter wants to lock and unlock at low speeds in overdrive. This results in early converter failure. Ford has reprogrammed the shift points on the newer ones. I have read that the 2005s have been "detuned" a bit to ease the load on the converters. I am betting the Escapes will be getting a new 5 or 6 speed auto trannie, or the CVT (if it works well in the 500) in the next couple of years.
There's a good chance it will eventually fail and Ford charges $3k for a rebuild. Three choices - dump it now, let Ford rebuild it later, or let someone else do it with a shift kit. Just curious, how many miles? I've got over 80k on my 2002 w/o problems but they're highway miles.
You can try since it's still under warranty. I'd try covering my rear with receipts and hopefully have it in the shop more than once before the warranty runs out - documentation. Since the problem will disappear after a flush...it's fixed per the dealership. But, if the tranny drops at 40k you'll probably have to talk to the manager and/or regional to get a "discounted" rebuild.
The CD4E has dropped on new Escapes with just a few thousand miles and there have been Escapes with 150k miles without problems. I've got over 80k miles without problems but it's the only long-term concern I have with the Escape. It's considered a sporadic problem but that's hard to tell someone who has to spend $3k on a rebuild. You can search the internet for CD4E and you'll see complaints back to 1994 when they started using it on a Mazda 2.5 liter engine.

I was just talking to someone about my gas issue and he suggested that it could be my torque converter acting up and that would cause a big decress in mpg what do you think a had a problem with the shuddering but all they did was change my fliud ???? they offered to change my converter do you think i should ??

The converter is what eventually goes and they charge around $3k for a rebuild. Believe me, if I had the shutter and they "offered" to replace the converter, I'd jump on that in a minute.
