I know this is a truck forum but i have something that is just nagging me. I was talking to Grandpa the other day and we begun talking about old vehicles. He was talking about the old Mustangs and stuff like that, you know the things that were hot when he was my age. He said in 73 a buddy of his bought a ford car that was a pretty small two door. (im assuming a falcon or something similar). But he said it had fiberglass fenders and plexiglass windows. I never heard of a 60s car with fiberglass fenders. Has anybody heard of a car like this. I just assuming it was in the sixties because he said the car was about from what he said 10 years old. Hes said it is the faster drag car he ever seen in his entire life it would absolutely smoke camaroes and other hot cars of that time. Is gramps finally went of the deep end or what? Well as it turns out his buddy died a couple of years ago and his old dragster is just sitting out in his barn. So guys is it worth looking into or a waste of time?
the only small ford with fiberglass fenders in the 60s was the thunderbolt fairlane. the galaxies had fiberglass fenders but it was NOT a small car. the thunderbolt had a 427 with 2 4 barrels and rated at 425 hp. they only came in 2 colors deep burgundy and white. there was only 11 burgundy ones and 100 white ones. ifyouve found one buy it . no questions asked. if the 427 is there pay any price for it. they are worth $100,000 unrestored.
Hmmm. A small two door from the mid sixties? I'm not sure about the 'glass fenders, but it sounds like a '64 Ford Thunderbolt. If I remember correctly, one hundred Fairlanes were pulled off the assembly line and outfitted with a special rear suspension, and were fitted with an R-code(I think) 427. This was the duel quad, 12.5 to one, solid lifter, 450 plus horsepower, fire breathing monster that put the whupping to the competitors in '64. It was THE BADDEST production line car that Ford ever built! I think they were built to run in the A/FX class on the dragstrip, and run they did! Thunderbolts had special plates rivited to the inside of the glovebox door stating that these were not passenger cars, and due to the special equipment on these cars, fit and finish would not represent the usual quality that Ford was accustomed to.
I do know for a fact that some Galaxies had 'glass front ends and aluminum bumpers, but Galaxies are not small cars.
Ok in the quest in locating this car i have hit a few snags. I thought you know drive 1 hour or so and take a look at this car and see what its like. I live in Illinois and the last time i checked Alabama isnt an hour drive. I called the guys daughter and she said she knows its still in the shed but she didnt think it was worth much because she hadnt herd it run or move since the late eighties. Ouch!!!!! Late eighties. I ask also asked her about the color of it and she said it was mostly white but had blue racing strips over the hood. Okay the not running or moving part i can handle. But the major snag is the guys wife cant find the title for the damn thing and she says from what she can remember they never had a title for it just a slip of paper with the previous owner and othe stuff. I think somethings fishy. If you guys are bsing me about the 450hp, and i drive to alambama for some fairland with a 289 in it im going to be very dissapointed. But oneplus she said they would be interested in getting rid of it the need the money (im thinking 500 bucks). Whatd do you guys think its worth if its in decent shape.
Some of the Mustang 350s had the two striped, I beleive the 500s are all accounted for. The Cobra had stripes too, but it had a 427 in it, with them 4 in. lake pipes down each side. There is a guy in Raleigh that has one, man what a machine.

In the still cool hours of the night, you can hear chevys rusting away.
not all of the shelby cobras came with 427's
the first came with a 260 first then a 289, the frame had to be changed to allow the size and power of the 427...even shelbys with the small blocks are quick cars....nice too
Bajhafords....We would ALL love to hear the outcome of what you find in the barn. Keep us posted! I just love finding old junk that turns into goldmines!

Have any of you ever heard of the Ford GT. I saw one at a local junkyard. It was a kit car but it is a late sixties early seventies. It was built by Ford to put in the lemans races and they kicked everyones @** with it. And the one I saw had a blue racing stripe one it. If you could get a picture of it I could tell you for sure. Does anyone else know what I am talking about?
You also have to remember that in the 60's there were after market companies making fiberglass panels for drag racing. Also its not that difficult to replace at least the side windows of a 60's car with plexiglass, alot of 60's cars had flat side glass. Also in the 60's if it didn't have a racing stripe it wasn't worth racing. Stripes were everywhere and if the car didn't come with them it was not hard to find somebody to add them. An original Thunderbolt hidden in a garage all these years? I don't think so. At the most you'll have a nice restorable drag car from the 60's. But don't be discouraged, there's a nice market for these ex-racers today and if you don't want it someone else will.
That's what it was! It wasn't in the junkyard it's self though, it was out front for sale. The owner of the yard told me it was a kit car so I don't believe it was the real thing. But that's exactly what it was.
What kind of shape is it in? I don't think these GT40 replicas are inexpensive to build, it seems a little strange to see one for sale at a salvage yard.
