Adjusting the choke.

Last spring I parted out a truck and kept the 400 which was starting and running very good.
This summer I put it in another truck. ('78 F250 Crewcab 4x4).

Now when I try to start it it takes a long time to get started.
I end up using starting fluid and it wil run for a few seconds at a time at first the gradually run longer and longer (if I keep pumping the gas pedel). It backfires easily during teh first stages of this process...
Eventually it runs fine.

I think it is the choke, and that has been suggest elsewhere here on FTE.
I have always had troubles with chokes. Considering I where I am that is bad thing!
Anyone have any advice for getting a choke dialed in?

Go out in the morning and adjust it when it is cold. Turn the adjuster until the plate closes. Check to see if the fast idle cam is engaged. If not adjust that too. Start the truck and warm it up, and check if the plate is completely open, and it goes back to normal idle. You may need to clean or rebuild the carb if you can't adjust it. Good luck with it.

I realized fuel bowl was empty...
Put on a new fuel pump and now it starts up quick but dies.
Now I can start adjusting it.
It is funny how you can go down the wrong path until you see an obvious problem the other direction!

I have done lost more work on this recently. It is running good now except for one thing, the fast idle isn't coming off completely when warm.
Do I just turn the housing clockwise or is there another adjustment?

OK, I think I got it. Now tomorrow I will see if it is still ok on the cold end...

If the fast idle was too high it could have been either the housing adjustment or the screw adjustment on the fast idle cam. Whatever you do make sure you check the whole cycle starting with it cold again.
