transmission work

I have a few more Q's, If i'm driving you crazy just let me know. Like i said i'm new to 4x4, but I've always wanted a big truck so i bought one! Here's my Question, I bought a 406 stroker crate motor from porformance unlimited. I've been told the transmission won't hold the power (420 hp, 470 ft lbs) That's what they told me on the phone. How hard is it to pull the transmission and tranfer case for a rebuild? c-6, and i'm not for sure what transfer case it has? I am a mechanic on 20,000,000 dollar helicopters so i'm pretty mechanically inclined i've just never tore into a pickup before! Any advice would be much appreciated!!! I may have a few more Q's before it's all said and done! Thanks for your time gentlemen!!!

The C6 is capable of hanling that kind of power, If it is in good condition. As far as rebuilding one I have never done it so I can't say. other than they are complex.

I agree. a factory C6 should handle 500 ft/lbs without too much trouble.. I'd rebuild it and put in a towing shift kit.

what year is your truck? if it is a 80-86, it'll be a Borg-Warner 1345 or a New Process 208. If it is ribbed on the back, it'll be a 1345. if it has a round aluminum tag that has a picture of a gear on it, it'll be a NP208.

if your truck is 87 or newer, it'll have a Borg Warner 1356.

if it is older than 80, it'll probably have either an NP203 or 205. I'm not too familar with the pre 80 trucks.

Borg Warner 1356 is simple to rebuild. So you won't have a problem with that.
As for a c-6 people say the are one of the easiest trans to rebuild plus there is a ton a parts available for them. To let you know how well a c6 can stand up if built right just think thats what the Bigfoot trucks run.

Rebuild, towing kit like Bremen said & I would add a heavy cooler to that also. Then it will take about any thrashing you can dish out. Heat is your biggest enemy.

One thing i would get is a better stall convertor to handle the power band of your motor better (and what you use it for) And if you are really serious maybe upgrade the clutch packs as well. (maybe a vavle body, but i think that this might be a bit overboard.)

Get a video from Eastwood to show you how to do your own C6. Also the 88 and newer C6's have some of the best stuff in them from the factory- more clutches, torrington bearings in place of some thrust washers. And diesel C6's have stronger planetaries.

stallyn you forgot to mention that you can't bolt the diesel C6 upto a small block, but you can take the parts out of it and put them into a small block tranny case. Also I would try, and get a 77 and newer (at the minimum) as there is sometimes problems with some of the shift kits working on 76, and older valve bodies.
As far as rebuilding it I haven't seen the eastwood video, but have heard from others it is pretty good, I would also recommend the TCI kit (make sure, and get the one that lists it has valve body modifications included) this has the shift kit in the box with the rebuild kit, and a pretty good manual on how to rebuild the trans with pictures. and really isn't very hard.
I have to add this though the number one killer of auto's is dirt so when rebuilding it make sure you have a clean area to work in, use brake clean for final cleaning of your parts, and stay away from the red shop rags, or any kind of terry cloth towel these will leave lint in the trans which can get into the vavle body and clog up the works I personally like old bed sheets torn up into rags.

Just about every post so far has some good advice like using a cooler, good clutches, shift kit which would preclude a custome valve body, choice of torque convertor and getting a video. The only thing that I would add would be to consider getting a lower set of gears while you are at it. You should be able to rogue those from an E4OD or buy a new set of Ford Racing or from a custom shop. ~.4 to 1 increase doesn't sound like much, but it is. The other thing is to add a good tranny temp guage.

Ford racing no longer makes those gears, and if you use the ones from an e4od you have to machine a couple of things to get it right, there are books that tell you what needs changed, but you can still get them from places that specialize in ford auto trans performance,

Oh One thing, when doing the rebuild, after the tranny is drained of all fluid i would do the rebuild on a white table of sorts with lips (pointing up) on all sides, so that way you don't loose any of the little parts that are in there.

Summit Racing still sells the Ford Racing wide ratio kit for the C6. The Part # is FMS-M-7398-F and it is $398.88.

The six-pinion planetary gear assembly comes from Ford's new 4R100 heavy duty transmission, features 2.72 low and 1.54 intermediate ratios, and increases torque capacity a whopping 43 percent. Other items in the kit include number 5, 7, 8, and 9 needle-bearing components, and best of all, no machining is required.
So I guess the best place to rogue the set is from a 4R100 rather than the E4OD.

The C6 is a very simple trans, less than 80 pieces including all the bolts.
See if you can obtain the old style rigid band its much tougher than the semi rigid.
