Freeze plug ?

I have a antifreeze/coolant leak and it is not coming from the hoses but I was told the engine has something called a freeze plug that could be the cause. I also thought that the block could be cracked. any suggestions on how to check for either of these. and the possible location of the freeze plug on a 3.8 liter 6 cylinder.

thanks
Scott

These freeze plugs are usually on the sides of the engine block. I think the 3.8 liter 6 is a V6 so I'm guessing the plugs are on the sides of the V. The plugs are about 1.5 inches in diameter and just press into the block. If one had rusted out and started leaking, you'll see a coolant leak coming from it. I have an old 72 Ford Truck and it's leaking from one of these plugs. I replaced one on a 57 Chevy years ago. I just pried it out with a screwdriver, cleaned the area around it and banged one back in. I don't remember how I did it. I do remember not having much room to work with. I probably coated it with gasket sealer before banging it in. But that solved the leak.

Freeze plugs are round brass or steel plugs pressed into 1.5 to 2 inch holes in the side of the engine block, in the cylinder bore area. The holes are there to facilitate the sand casting process used to make the block. The "freezing" has to do with the solidification of molten cast iron, and nothing to do with providing protection against engine damage from low temperatures and inadequate antifreeze.

If you ran the truck on plain water or let the antifreeze get diluted, and it got really cold, there is a good chance the block is cracked. Usually the crack is in the water jacket, centered vertically in the engine. It is common for the crack to propagate from one freeze plug hole over to the adjacent one.

t is possible, but not very likely, that a freeze plug was dislodged by ice formation, or has developed a leak for other reasons. This is usually the forlorn hope of someone feeling guilty for screwing up with the coolant.

If the truck was overheated in the past, or is overheating now, and you are losing coolant without obvious signs of a leak, chances are you have a bad head gasket.
