Transfer case, bw13-56
I am currently in the process of installing a 393 in the F-150. At the same time, I am also swapping in the ZF trans to replace it's stock M5OD tranny. The ZF trans will come from the 89 F-250. I then, will take the M5OD, and put it into the F-250. Basically, swapping transmissions between the two trucks.
Now, the TC on the F-150 has the newer shifting pattern, the older 89 has the older version where you pull up, push to the left and then up again for 4L. The 95's is just simply pull up, get by the notch for N, and get into 4L, theres no left or right, just forward and backward on that shifter.
If I can, I'd like to just leave the transfer cases on each transmission and swap the whole unit as one, between the trucks. First, I'm wondering if the 95's transfer case will swap with the 89's in both trucks. Are the different shifters a problem, or is there anything else I'm missing? Second, I'm wondering how to evaluate the condition of the two transfer cases...how do you tell if they're in need of a rebuild or work?
My 95's TC shifts fine, havn't had any problems with it. The only issue I do have, is when I'm in 4L. When in 4L, it works perfectly fine, but if I'm not super gentle with the throttle (it being a standard tranny) it will kinda make the gears buck I guess you could say. Being in 4L, the drivetrain is very sensitive to throttle input, and I can simply hear the TC making gear like ratchety type sounds when torque is akwardly applied. The F-250's TC does not make any of these noises. It almost sounds as if there is slack in the gears and they are just ractcheting I guess. I can't easily describe it. Is this an area of concern? I probably won't rebuild it if it goes into the F-250, it's a beater.
However, the TC in the 89 sounds and works fine, but if you get under the truck with everything in neutral, and try to turn the driveshaft, it can move slighty since there is slack in the drivetrain. When you try to turn the driveshaft, you can hear noises in the transfer case of the parts moving. It doesn't sound too bad, but is this any indication of a problem? I'm basically curious how you determine the condition of a transfer case, and what to look for when looking for problems in it. I'd rather not find out on the trail or snowy road by destroying the transfer case and splitting the case in half.
As for the slack in the case, it's just a bit of slack in the chain, I've never seen a chain drive case without some, not even a new one. I'd say that the one in your 95 has seen it's fair share of use and the chain is stretched from your description. The one in the 89 is probably plenty serviceable.
I feel as though I'm just going to swap them as a unit and call it a day. Thanks.
I might consider just swapping the shifter linkages...is that difficult? It looks like 3-4 torx bits on the 95's, havn't looked at the 89's yet. Am I able to swap the linkages over if I feel the need to have the patterns as original?
Personally I'd seperate the transmission and t-case, makes the job alot easier as the transfer case throws the balance waaay off and makes the job a PITA, even with a good transmission jack. I've done it both ways, and the extra work to seperate and re-attach the t-case to me is worth it when the transmission isn't trying to tip over on it's side when you're trying to line up the clutch.
As for swapping the shifter assembly between the M5OD and the ZF, the bracket to bolt it to the tranmission may not swap over, but, I'd almost bet that if it won't, you can probably still swap the rest over. I've worked on both, but never had a M5OD and ZF side by side to compare.
