Hey everyone,
I'm wanting to convert my 4X4 supercab to a crewcab. When I locate the crewcab truck, should I buy the whole truck or just the cab? I'm thinking of adding the back section on the supercab to the back of the crewcab to give the kids extra room. I would also like to keep the 8 foot bed, but it may be way too long. I also want this to be a highway truck, No mudding, but 35" or 38" tires and wheels. Strickly a family truck to go out to truck shows, shopping with the wife,,,,weeeee, ect. I may want the engine replaced along with and automatic tranny with overdrive. It has a powerhouse 400 backed by the C6 now. I want the high gear on the highway but not lose the ability to smoke the new trucks. All suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys. Crash worthyness is also a concern!!!

Reason: misspell
a supercrewcab long bed??? whew.....thats one long truck....and heavy, smokin the other guys will be no easy feat in a 50' long truck, sounds like a killer idea, why not find a frame for a older model ford uhaul truck, then find your cabs and fab it all the uhaul frame....the rear end in a uhaul should have some decent highway gears, combined with a 5 or 6 speed manual, and a well built 460, you would have your very own family truckster, good luck on your quest for great length ...
no I have the u-haul truck already, its got 6:17 gears 70mph tops.
plus its a straight frame, the supercab part of this thing, has a unique bowed frame that allows for the floorpan of the supercab. (the crewcab uses a straight chassis-cab frame)
plus a really heavy frame and suspension. U-haul F-350s are about the same wheel base as a supercab.
Why not restore your '79 for shows and a family truck as you talked about. I think it's to nice to cut up. Done right that body style will bring home trophy's all the time!
I have a '79 400 c6 with Gear Vendors. It basically splits 1st and 2nd gear and gives you overdrive. I can cruise at 70-75 with no problem and it's still got alot left! Acceleration and towing is much better also. It's like you have a 6 speed auto in your truck. You Can't use it 4x4 though.
Then after your done with your truck, a truck that looks like it's very worthy of a restoration start looking for differant cabs and frames for a SuperCrewCab.
Just my thoughts!
wow a uhauls gearing is that all???? i just thought the one i drove had a mean granny gear, and a governor....i have a B-700 ford bus with a eaton split rear axle, wonder what kinda gears it has?? oh well, good luck matthew.
there is a 76 highboy around here that has been sitting in a driveway for about 5-6 years that I know of. looks good and un-molested. I think after I sell my powerstroke, I'll try to buy it, stretch the frame, and put one of my spare crewcabs on it. a little extra frame rail, and it could become a supercrewcab too.........
