87 Ranger Intermittant Starting Problem
I'm stuck on my 87 2.9L EFI Ranger. It has started to intermittantly have a starting problem where it will crank but not start(always at the wrong time) leaving me stranded. Then it starts right up anywhere from a couple of hours later to a couple of days later. When it won't start, it has spark at the plugs and pumps fuel thru the Shrader when turning over. I've replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pressure relay. If the TFI, pickup coil, or other associated parts were bad, wouldn't it not spark?? Any suggestions on troubleshooting this problem would be appreciated.

I'm having close to the same problem. I went to replace the cap and rotor. Put the new on and now no start, put the old back on , no start. The best thing i was told to do is to take the tfi mod out and have it tested. This unit works as if they were like the old points system. Any Autopart store can test dist. modules, but call first.
