Transmission type and cooler question

My 2000 F250-SD-4x4 V10 long bed with 4 EOD automatic does not seem to have a towing package: It does not have the helper spring, it does not appear to have a transmission cooler. I had a hitch receiver installed after getting the truck and have towed a 5500 lbs travel trailer w/o problems. Now I have bought a 9500 GVW lbs 5th-wheel and want to add the helper spring and a transmission cooler. Two different Ford service people told me I have one already. But I believe it is the cooler for the power steering. I cannot see a connection to the transmission by looking under the truck, I did not have the truck on a lift though and it is hard to follow the hoses from that relatively small auxiliary cooler. My friend has a F350 6.0L diesel and his transmision cooler is in front of the radiator.

How do I find out if I have or have not a transmission cooler? Alos I would like to know what type (#) of transmision I have. Is there a website where I enter my VIN and get information about what's in the truck and what not?

Thanks,
Wolfgang

you may have cooler in the radiator(trans lines going in and out at the bottom) you air to fluid cooler should be between the a/c condensor and the radiator on the passenger side (you have to lift up the rubber cover on top of the condenser/radiator to see it) if you doing any big towing, which it sounds like you are doing, i would put in a tranny cooler. by the way your tranny is a 4R100 not a E4OD

For sure you at least have lines going to the radiator. I'm pretty sure all the superduties have a real tranny cooler. It's huge, between the ac condenser and radiator. Lines go from tranny to radiator to cooler back to tranny. The lines run on the passengers side. The small cooler that is visible from the front by the license plate is the power steering cooler.

Your cooler will be fine. Take your $50 and buy a tranny temp guage.

Super Duty Trailer Tow Package

Its my understanding that all the trucks come with a trailer tow type package as standard equipment. The trailer receiver hitch is an option because some want a fifth wheel set up. The truck should have a flat four and the seven pin plug for a trailer. Also the automatic trucks have a trans temp gauge and a cooler big enough to tow with, and thats standard equipment as well.

I think they started with the Tranny temp gauge in 2003 or 2004. My 01' didn't come with one.

i know the cooler in the v10 is bigger than what is in PSD but i will tell you right now the factory trans cooling system in my truck was not fine. when i had my 2500# lance capmer in the bed and pulling my 4000# boat over the passes here in colorado my trans temp would get up to 220* + and cook the tranny fuild. i installed a 24,000 GVW cooler and now it never gets to 200*i would say "it would be better to be safe than sorry" the transmissions are already the weak link on these trucks.
