One additional item to check, the fuel injectors. The 5.4 liter has a fuel injector issue with original fuel injectors being stuck open. There was a maintenance recall, but it ended with engines manufactured in Dec 2005 (fyi, 2006 has same engine.) Bad news: Unfortunately the only remedy is replacing all fuel injectors and draining fuel from cylinders, it will cost about $1000 more at dealer due to mark up on Ford parts (about $2500 total.) Really bad news: If you do not fix, you could have hydrolock and associated "catastrophic engine failure." Good news, if you have this problem, your fuel efficiency will jump after fix (mine jumped from 13 to 15 MPG.)
After reading this thread and having the throttle body cleaned by the dealer, my 2005 F150 displayed ""Engine Failsafe Mode" while driving to a pharmacy this morning. It happened once before. There was no change in the engine performance. I just reset the display and kept on driving. I suspect there would be no control module code this time either (the dealer never found one). I'm thinking that the issue is faulty or at least erratic sensor that is creating this alarm. Anything similar happen to any of you? I liken this to the false "door ajar" warning that I had about a year ago. Intermittent/sticking door switch was the cause…fixed the issue with WD40. Is there a central "Engine Failsafe" sensor or relay to anyone's knowledge?
BTW, Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there.
Hello this is my first post... First off thanks for letting me lurk for so long, secondly I hate that my first post is in such an old thread but here it goes. I've got a 2005 5.4 screw lariat with 173,000 on it. I just had the timing kit and cam phasers done also new plugs to the tune of about 1,800 in parts and labor, the mechanic who helped me out advised me to clean out the fender "airbox" area which led me to cleaning the entire air intake filter and then throttle body because it's been idling funny(and a few stalls with low rpm's and wheel turned) since timing repair... All comes apart easy enough cleaned it up put a new throttle position sensor as the old one looked crusty figured while I'm here I might as well... So now the truck started up right away and went to fail safe mode without even going into gear. It will go into gear but will idle at about 800 rpm then stalls. The idle seems better upon first start but then sputters out.. Phew that was a lot any idea would help me out a lot
