New computer needed

I have a 1989 Ranger 2.9 4WD that has an intermittent problem - running fine sometimes, rough at others. After trying independent mechanics who were unable to locate the problem, I took it to the dealer. They said it has a bad computer, but because the truck is "so old" they are unable to supply a new one.

The only place I've found so far that sells remanufactured units is Advance Auto Parts - and their listing for my vehicle has a different ID# than my unit. Mine is E9-B22 (or perhaps it's 822) Advance is E9-TF-GA. My truck may be a military specifications truck, which may account for the difference.

Any suggestions of where to get my unit repaired or to get the proper unit?
thanks,
John

eec

Do you have an trouble codes first? Did they do a pin point test. Which wires coming from the eec were bad. I had two wires, one was the signal returns to all the sensors, that had to much voltage. I just replaced mine on my 87 f150. I had to go with the ford oem number off the engine computer. When i went with my truck info it came up blank. I got mine throught Cardone or A1 Cardone, call them for suppliers. I have the 800 number if you need it. Also Standard Motor Company may have a rebuilt. The chances are real slim that you have a bad engine computer, it hardly ever goes bad. When dealers can't find the problem that's what they change. Check to see if you can return it if it doesn't fix the problem. By the way I messed my engine computer when I was rewiring my truck. When you pick up your rebuilt you may want to hang on to your computer for a while, you will have to pay a core change until you return it. I did this incase i had to send it in to be rebuilt. They can't rebuild it if the main chip is bad. Also they can test it for about 35.00, take two weeks.

Test or replace your Ignition Control modual on the distributor. I just replaced both my dist and ICM and it made a big difference in alot od drivability problems.
I also replaced the ECM which I got from a supplier in KY. I have their number somewhere if you want it.

I'll agree with ya, Mike L, the computer is probably the most
reliable part of a modern vehicle, however, the sensors, and
the wiring leave much to be desired...
Goddam bean counters...
