Inverter enough for a computer

I have a lap top computer I want to be able to use in my truck. A cig lighter plug for it is about $100. I was wondering how big of an inverter I needed It says on the box INPUT 100-240v~50-60HZ 2A
OUTPUT 19v------7.9A

Lightbulb Inverter

If I remember correctly, inverter capacities are rated in watts. To figure your wattage requirements (roughly) multiply volts times amps. You quote 19 volts and 7.9 amps. This multiplies out to 150 watts. This would be the minimum size output for an inverter. Wouldn't you be able to find a plug in adapter for less? I know you stated $100, shop around to try to find one for less. Unless you're looking for an inverter for your truck for other purposes. If so, remember to add the needed watts for the laptop to the needed watts of other desired equipment. Don't purchase too small an inverter or your $$ could go up in smoke. Proper fusing on both sides (line and load- or supply and demand) of the inverter is very important- to protect your laptop or other equipment and to protect the inverter

Hope this helps.

Make sure you get on that says true sine wave, they cost more but your laptop will last much longer.

You could get an inverter from Home Depot or the like. Depending on what vehicle you have, you might not want to plug it into your lighter. Some lighters are powered through the light switch. When your lights are on, if you have too much draw through the lighter, you can burn up the light switch. This happened to a friend of mine. You can change the source of the lighter power wire if you have to, with it's own fuse, or hook up the inverter from a different source than the lighter. Also I would use a surge suppressor. They have them now with a battery back up system built in so you don't lose info if there is a problem. Good luck with it.

Is this the inverter box or the computer? The reason I ask is what is the 19v output?

Get these power specs for both the computer and the proposed inverter.
