I have a 1999 Mountaineer AWD and it has an new noise in the right front end when moving. It is a whirring noise that sounds like I have a studded snow tire on it. The noise just started and is getting worse. I jacked up all four corners and put it in gear (thus eliminating the possibility of tire noise). I could still hear the noise but can't tell where it is coming from. Using a screwdriver as a stethascope I couldn't really hear any vibration when I placed it on the backside of the spindle. I could detect a little vibration or clicking noise when I placed it on the tube where the axle comes out, but I also don't know what it is supposed to sound like normally. I have the Mercury extended warranty that covers the transmission (it has 61,000 on it right now) and it expires 03/05 or 75,000 miles.
Any ideas on what it may be since I fully anticipate the dealer to tell me its normal because its not. It is driven every day and it has done it in the three years we have owned it.
Thanks,
Bryon
Sounds like the bearing/hub assembly to me also. They are single unit items and very expensive parts though easy to replace. I had both of them replaced under the same warrenty as you have. Ford said it wasn't covered because the item number was not on the list of covered parts in the warrenty but the Mercury dealer covered it under the same warrenty since that item was on their list of covered parts, just a different number then what Ford showed-it was like dealing with a government bureaucracy.
Anyway, got mine replaced for the deductable amount of $100. Would have cost about $850 at the dealer without the warrenty. Good luck.
I saw it was covered in the warranty and will be taking it to the Mercury dealer, and I have already had the argument in my head a hundred times but I'm still not looking forward to it.

That is almost exactly how it happened, the dealer called me & told me that the parts weren't covered. I told him I had a friend who just went through the same thing and to check the name of the part because it was a sealed unit. He did and willingly replaced both sides. This isn't the first time the Mercury dealer has gone out of their way to help me. It cost me $107.35. Thanks for the info. Additionally, they said they had a recal on the multi-function switch and they replaced it also (turn signal, washer etc).
