Hey guys my friend Buzz managed to steal a 78 F-100 in decent running condition the other day for about 2 hundred bucks. He was told the engine in it was a 351 windsor but i dont believe so, my guess is its a 360 or a 390. Now ive heard its nearly impossible to tell the difference between the 360 and 390 but id like to know some specs on it just so i can be sure its an FE. the number we read on it was d7te 9425 sa if thats the right one, if someone could give me some block numbers. i didnt see a 352 but its dark out there so i cant see very well.
I thought the last year for FE's were 76'? That D7 number is a 77' Look and see if part of the intake goes under the valve cover. Thats usually a dead give away.
FE service blocks were cast up through 1978. If it is an FE it was a swap in engine, not original. It sounds like an FE number, still, check to make sure. 5 valve cover bolts and angled plugs //\\ give it away.
The more i start working with all types of Ford engines the more i start to notice alot of the casting numbers look the same. Like when I see D2TE , i think FE head , but that exact number is cast on my 300 6 cyl head.
The Windsor and the FE will both have the thermostat housing on the intake manifold. The Cleveland and the M series have the thermostat on the water pump housing. And you ruled out a 429/460?
thanks for the help guys, havent talked with him in a couple days but when i go by ill take that in mind. the motor in the truck probably isnt the original, im guessing so because it has an automatic with a clutch pedal and a hole in the floor. ruled out a 460 cause thats whats in my truck and it looks different, but ill go by later today and check the intake manifold under the valve covers and that thermostat housing.
