1989 2.9l EFI. I just replaced the fuel pump. When I first start it up it idles at about 1200 for 2-3 min. then drops to 700-800. After driving for any ammount of time with the RPM around 3000 it stays there even after I let off the accelerator. If I push in the clutch when its at 2000 it will jump up to 3000. If I let it get below 1500 then push in the clutch it will sometimes stay there, sometimes jump up and stay up, sometimes jump up and go down to normal idle. It doesn't always happen though, sometimes I can drive all day with it working fine.
Could this be some kind of adverse affect from the new fuel pump? Maybe debris in the injectors. If so will that fuel injector cleaner work? Could it be the TPS, or some other sensor?
I was just looking at the truck and I noticed a crack along the parting line on the top of the throttle body. I'm pretty sure this has something to do with my problem. Will someone please confirm my suspicion, or tell me this would not cause the problem. I am very new to auto repair, and maintenance, so any input would be greatly appreciated.
What may have caused this part to crack? What else might this crack have affected?
Very good possibility about the crack. Spray a little WD-40 on the crack while engine is running (carefully!) See if that causes rpm change. JB Weld may fix it cheaply if you don't want to spring for a new intake.
