Help, 4 low doesn't work on my 1993 ranger (5 sp. manual with touch button 4x). 4 high works fine, but nothing happens when I try to put it into 4 low. I pulled the transfer case motor and it works fine for 4 high, but yet again, nothing for 4 low. I checked the connections on the button, 4x module, and the transfer case motor. The previous owner used the truck mainly for highway travel. I talked to the ford dealer and they said that it is probably the motor, a common problem for 4x when it isn't used. Anyone heard the same? Which wires can I test to see where power is getting to from the button on down to the motor? Any help is greatly apreciated,
Thanks
Have you tried checking the switch itself? also, try establishing continuity throughout your electrical system, dealing w/ your 4wd system. if the wiring is frayed, or shortedout, you would get a similar effect. hope this helps.
Was it really cold when you attempted to switch to 4 low? I know I have to let mine warm up a little before it'll switch if it's cold (below about 20F). I don't know why or if it should be doing this but it works great when it's warm.
My 93 had the same problem, but thiat was right off the dealer's lot, so I made them fix it. It was the motor that engages the 4low. You should be able to manually engage 4low also by removing the motor and turning the sleeve by hand or with some needle nose I've been told.
this may sound like a really stupid question but i like to check everything. my automatic 2000 requires you to shift into neutral with the brake pressed before it will shift into 4 low
I had the same problem with my 92 Ranger. I went to a junkyard and bought a used motor off a Bronco II. If I remember right, it had about 4 wires and they all had connections that unplug except a brown wire. I had to cut that one and splice it back together under the truck. That solved my problem. Also, like the other guy said, check the simple things first. Make sure you are pushing the clutch all the way in. Mine won't switch into low if I don't.
