4x4 Engagement

I have a 1996 Eddie Bauer Bronco. It has a push button 4x4 engagment and automatic hubs. The other day I got stuck, when I pressed the 4x4 button I heard a clicking-grinding sound. That was followed by a huge clank when it caught into 4x4. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it.

Thanks.

were the wheels spinning when they engaged? if so that would cause a clank as the clutch in the xfer box tried to engage with a rotating shaft.

Any help?

(My original answer was going to be "the problem is you got stuck" but I didn't think that would help much! )

the other thing to bare in mind as its a mistake I made until I got an owners manual imported from Florida is that 4L can only be engaged when the transmission is in N. 4H can be in any state.

Forgive me if I am preaching to the converted.

Yes, make sure you are in Neutral. It will make a HUGE difference! And NEVER shift when you are spinning your tires.
