I'm looking a used F150 and just drove a '00, 2WD, 4.2L V6 and 5spd. Every time I shifted into 3rd it would grind. I though it was me but it didn't matter where I had the clutch it would grind shifting up into 3rd every time.
I don't know, but if you find out, let me know. I have the same year, engine, and transmission. Mine grinds going into third from up or down if my RPMs are a little high. Like I try to down shift too soon, or upshift fast with high RPMs. If I baby it, it won't grind. And number three is the only one. I bought it from a rental agency and always thought it was an alignment problem. That is interesting. That might be a good one for the Ford factory guys.

It seems that on the Mazda transmissions if there is going to be a synchro problem it will be for 3rd gear. I haven't replaced any lately but used to do tons of them.
