94 Ranger Automatic O/D with a disastrous downshift problem
I have a 94 Ranger with an automatic O/D transmission. When the truck is decelerating and downshifting into 1st the truck shutters and vibrates. If the deceleration is continued to a full stop, the result is the same as stopping a vehicle with a standard transmission without stepping on the clutch. The truck will stop and violently stall the engine. When restarted it shifts normally until another full stop is attempted. The local trans shop thinks a solenoid that releases pressure from the torque converter is failing or an input to the solenoid is failing. He says it will take time and money to isolate the problem. Has anybody else run across a problem like this? Could there be an easy fix?
