97 Tranny Shift Problem PLEASE REPLY, NEED HELP
This is what happened today and has been happening off and on for awhile...
We took a freeway trip that was about 70 miles today. When on the freeway the truck shifted fine for awhile, but after several miles the truck started shifting a little rough. After exiting the freeway the truck REALLY starts shifting hard, it kind of slams into each gear, but does not seem like it is slipping. The truck also starts making a loud whining noise that sounds like power steering. In fact, the sound gets louder when you turn the steering wheel. We parked the truck in a parking lot and shut if off for about 5 minutes and ran in a store, after we came out, we drove the truck for about 20 minutes longer and the problem does not return until after about 40 miles.
About two weeks ago the same problem, except it happened in city driving, and the O/D off light started flashing. As soon as we shut if off, the light goes out and the problem dissapears...only to reappear after much driving.
We changed the fluid and filter, and the problem did seem to go away..but like I said, returned today during the trip.
My Expedition is a 97 XLT with the 5.4 V8 and the towing package...has the tranny cooler, power steering cooler, 4x4 with 2HI, Auto, 4HI, and 4LO, and the 3.73 gearing. We turned over 60,000 miles today...
What is the problem? Please help. Has anyone else experienced anything else like this???

It sounds like after it gets hot it craps out.
The VSS is located on top of the rear diff and is easily replaced. Should cost around $24.
