Question Question about fuel filter replacement

Is there anything that I need to be concerned about when I replace my fuel filter in a 97 PSD, or do I simply open the canister and replace the filter?
What I'm wondering about is if there is air in the canister after replacing the filter will the engine purge it out by itself when the engine is started? Or will I have to top off the canister or possibly bleed the injectors. Does this engine have an electric or mechanical fuel pump?

The only thing I would check for in your water separator is for any dirt or debris at the bottom. No you do not have to fill it back up because when you start it will fill up and purge itself.

Hey thanks for your help. I thought it would be better to ask a dumb question first, instead of trying to fix a problem afterwards.
I really appreaciate this forum, it has helped me out on several occasions.

another thing u might want to do.... (that i didn't do the first time on my 97 ) is to clean out the screen on the fuel presure regulator... this is located on the driverside on the inside of the canister (it is a small hole... about half way down on the threads... you will see it when u pull out the fuel filter) clean this out CAREFULLY with some Q-tips... and use as many as you need untill they come out clean! ( this will prevent future problems from developing.... mine was so clogged that the truck would still at low rpm's)... hope this helps!!

if there's dirt/crud/dark stuff at the bottom of the bowl when changing out the fuel filter what does that mean? is that fairly common? can it also be cleaned by a qtip or rag or something?

OK, I got it swapped out with no problems. I also didn't find anything in the hole for the fuel pressure regulator.
One thing that I'm going to half to do is find a cheeper place to get the fuel filters. I went down to the local car quest and the filter cost me $36. There has to be a better way to go than that.
Thanks again for all of your imput.
