I have a '98 Ranger w/4L and the other day, when I tried shifting into 4X4, BOTH 4x4 Hi and Lo lights flashed, but nothing happened. They kept flashing 6 times every 2 minutes. Then later everything was back to normal. It still won't go into 4x4Lo. What are those flashing lights suppose to indicate?
Also I was trying to remove the MAF sensor, but one of the screws has some black coating on it, like a epoxy or something. It's hard and I finally got the top chipped off, but now can't get the torx driver in to remove it. Any suggestions short of driling the head, or using vice-grips?

As far as removing the sensor screws, you can probably get them out with a small pair of vice grips by carefully grabbing the side of the screw with the grips. They aren't torqued in that tight cause they don't need to be. The plastic cover is supposed to keep you from removing the screw. Try heating up the top of the screw with a lighter to melt the plastic which can then be gouged out with a small screwdriver or something like that. Once the plastic is out you need a 'security' torx driver which has a hole in it to fit the pin inside the screw, you can get these at any autoparts store. Sorry but I'm clueless on the 4WD question.
My wife has a 98 Explorer doing the same thing. From what little research I have done so far, it sounds like the actuator motor is bad. I am assuming that this is locted on the transer case, but this isn't a NP205 like I am used to working on! If I come up with anymore info, I'll post it.
