Valve Noise???
In this forum there is a topic like "My 300 sounds like a diesel", there is a lot of people who has long time fighting with valve/lifters noise like me. Of course something is wrong but I never find it...Trending Topics
Thats a fairly easy fix usually. Try some ATF and marvel oil in the oil for a while. That should free it up eventually. Most stick when they are cold. If that doesn't do it, changing the lifters is easy on the sixes. You might just be out of adjustment on a few rockers. Need to see if you have positive stop, or adjustable rockers. Need to check the valve adjustment to make sure you are actually at zero lash, or slightly tighter, for each valve. "1/2 turn down is a good avg setting, although ford says you can use up to 1 full turn.
Want to make sure you have proper oil flow from each pushrod, going to the rockers. Sometimes the rockers can gaul out a certain way, and the way the pushrod will fit into the rocker, the oil flow will be stopped at that point. I've had this happen once.
You should be able to fix this with a little detective work.
As an example, I just got the 74 I have, recently. Like 2-3 weeks ago...It had one lifter that would stick when the engine was cold, but almost always went away once fully warmed up. The truck hasn't been driven enough before I got it. Sat all the time...Once that single lifter quit sticking, the engine purred like a new engine. So I added one small bottle of marvel oil, and then about 1/2 quart of ATF, to the oil. Been driving it about 2 weeks, and the lifter is quiet now. I prefer the mild and slow cleaning method using the ATF, compared to say a strong engine flush. I don't like using flushes. They flush too much...
You'll end up with a smoker if you aren't lucky, due to the new larger clearancesin the engine, due to cleaning all the varnish, gunk, etc that helps to seal things... Strong flushes can be the kiss of death to an old motor that is on the edge of needing a rebuild. I avoid, and use the soft slow methods...Being my lifter seems to be freeing up, I'll probably change the oil pretty soon. Maybe this weekend...BTW, maybe I should say I hate "excessive" valve noise....
But my 240 in the 74 has 108k. Even thats not too awful much for a 74, "30 years old , this year" and nothing really for a maintained ford six.. Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
This year at 46,000 miles the lifters all of a sudden started getting noisy. Changed the oil and added 1 qt. of Marvel mystery oil. Did not help!
Ordered new lifters and gasket set. Upon disassembly found approx. 8 of the 12 rockers worn where they make contact with the valves (the motor was immaculet inside indicating regular oil changes)
Replaced lifters and rocker sets (rocker, ball, nut)
Motor now sounds new!
