I have a 1986 C-6 tranny attached to it is a New Process T-case. In the truck is a T-18 Tranny with a Borg Warner T-case. I want to use the C-6 in the truck but keep the Borg Warner T-case is there a tail shaft housing out there that will mount to the C-6 and accept the Borg Warner T-case? Or can you only use the NP T-case with the C-6 auto?
All the "tailshaft extensions" and output shafts on C6 4x4's are the same from a late date in 78 to 87. They will bolt directly to a NP205, NP208, BW1345 and BW1356. The 56's use a different shifter but I "think" a 45 shifter would work. Being that you have a T18 you should be able to reuse your driveshafts also.
I gotta ask were are you getting that information from? If you grab a T-case gasket you can see the difference between the Borg Warner and the New Process. I really wish that was true...maybe it is. hopefully you can prove my other source wrong.
The info is right from Ford Motor Company. And I have done a couple of stick to auto swaps. One was on a 83 F250 with a T19 and a BW1345, to a C6. You must use the extension housing for the automatic. The column, floor tunnel, extension housing and output shaft were out of a 86 Bronco with a C6 and NP208, the trans was from a 85 2wd F250 with the output shaft and extension housing from the Bronco. On that one the I was able to reuse the driveshafts. The extension housing to transfer case gasket is Ford part# E7TZ-7086-A.
Maybe you are calling it the extension housing and I am calling it the tail shaft. I am talking about the housing that comes off the tranny and mates the T-case to the Transmission. Sounds like you need to use a different extension housing? Or are you saying if I remove the the T-case from the C-6 I can install the Borg Warner?
Yes, The housing that bolts to the trans is the extension housing and would be the tailshaft if it were 2wd. Basically it is the part the trans mount and the shifter bolts to. That stays with the trans. And yes the BW TC will bolt right in place of the NP.
My buddy just did a visual for me and confirmed that the gaskets are in deed different as I thought.......Ummmm he also sent me over a great picture of the two different length housings. One for a BOrg Warner and One that bolts to a NP. So ummm....hmmmmmm...aaaaa....could you explain???? I'm not syaing you are lying or anything, but.................Where are you getting your information from???? I hope there isn't bogus people puttin info on this board...that would make me angry. Maybe you own a CHevy???? Want to keep my Ford down for a while , but I am still calm an rational at least. But please again explain. Maybe i am misinterpurting.........
What housing is he measuring? Yes the housings will be different length housings from a T18 to a C6, because they stay with the trans. I don't know what gaskets they are looking up, but there is only one listed for 79-up. It is 8" round o.d. and 5" i.d. with 6 bolt holes and one for the dowel.
As for where my info is coming from, is from Ford (I am a Parts Manager at a dealer), and from doing a few swaps myself and from owning about 20+ Ford Trucks and Broncos.
7K42S is right, although the housing are slighty different lenghts they will still work, as its a the output/input shafts from the tranny/t-case slide into each other. Also in the 70's there were to different lenght housings, one was 4" long and the other was 8" (thats what your t-18 has), although these were different you can interchange t-cases between them with no problems because there is enough, how do you say, room in the shafts to allow this to happen, and i myself have down such a swap as well.
