Need help! 1993 Ford Explorer problems shifting
Okay It is almost christmas and it is time for something to go wrong. LOL
I have a 1993 ford explorer bought it from a neighbor about 1 1/2 ago. Been a real nice truck till now. I had drove a stick as a kid and really wanted a nother one so my husband let me buy this one well now I wounder if I did the right thing.
Problems- Started about 3 mo ago when it would not stay in 4 th gear not all the time just some times. Well now you can push the clutch as hard as you want and still not get it to go in to the gear you want. Some times it will some times it won't I guess it depends on it's mood.
I drove it to town this morning ( won't do that again till it is fixed
I have heard everything from it could be the transmission to replace the whole clutch. to it just may need some fluid. My husband is good at some stuff when it comes to trucks and cars, but he has a broken figure at the moment so it may have to wait if it to hard to fix.
Any idea's about what it could be?
Lady in need of answers.

You should be able to push on the clutch while someone under the truck watches to see if the clutch release fork is moving normally.
Also check the fluid in the clutch master cylinder.
Your problem sounds more clutch related than transmission to me.
Good luck

Although it is not clear, the forks are locked to the shift shaft with a roll pin that is pressed thru the fork and a hole in the shaft (58 shows a hint of the pin).
Since you started out as jumping out of 4th gear, I would suspect the roll pin for the 3-4 shift fork is broken or otherwise damaged, which allows the fork to slide around on the shaft. The result is that when engaged (either 3rd or 4th gear), you cannot get it out of gear and into another due to the interlocks in the shifter. Sometimes you can jiggle the shifter around enough to manage to get it ito another gear.
Hope this helps
