I am searching for some info on what I believe is a "Ranger" model tailgate panel. It is 12 inches top to bottom and gives the tailgate a "flat" appearance. I'm getting my reference from the '71 PICKUPS BY FORD brochure.
Question # 1... how do I get that sucker off? Question # 2... has anyone ever seen one on ebay or for sale (NOS)? Price? Question# 3... Is it in the aftermarket like the thinner "Sport Custom" panel?
71, I know what you are talking about. As far as question 1 and 3 I am not too sure as I have never dealt with anything that had this trim level on it. As far as seeing them forsale, I have seen entire tailgates that had that panel on them on ebay and I have also seen a couple in some local yards a while ago. That panel must be somewhat rare because I don't see it as often as I see the smaller ones or none at all.
I am doing a '71 Ranger XLT and it has that panel. The way it is removed is with about 10 or 12 screws on the inside of the gate. I had to grind most of the screws off of mine but maybe yours won't be as difficult. You need what they call "D" clips to reinstall it. I found the clips at Harbor freight. Mine had woodgrain long ago so I replaced it with the same stuff. I can take a picture tonight and post it tomorrow if that would help. Let me know, Billemc
billemc,
Thanks for the reply... I gather that your panel if XLT Ranger w/woodgrain and smaller "FORD" lettering... mine never had woodgrain, it is an argent silver w/ a black outlineand the black "FORD" lettering is larger... it is the same one in the
'71 PICKUPS BY FORD[U][B] displaying the "Ranger" model w/o XLT... maybe a picture of the back side of the tailgate so it would be easier for me to locate my screws... the paint is thick... I see some "raises" where screws or rivets might be... by the way I searched Harbor Freight for the clips you refered to... maybe you could explain in further detail. THANKS AGAIN!
Yep they are correct. a bunch of bolts holding it onto the tailgate.
Mine was dented and gouged and painted where the woodgrain startted to come off. I found a NOS silver/argent and black one on ebay about 1.5 years ago and I think I got it for 3 bills. I have not seen one sence but I am not on there every day either.
