on my 87 ford ranger the blinkerhandle will not engage any more. well I took the steering column apart and there is a box in there that it hooks into. well I noticed that the light switch also hooks into this switch box. and the cruise control. all of those seem to work. and the flashers work. does anyone know if I need to replace only the handle or the whole box and both the light handle and blinker handle.

Need a little clarification here, when you say it will not engage do you mean it does not turn on the blinker/turn signal or the handle will not move at all ?? If the handle does move then it could be just the switch contacts are dirty, if it dont move something must be out of whack in the mechanism. Please let me know and maybe we can figure this out.
Shouldnt the light switch be on the dash on the left side of the column? I know when mine went out on my 83 ranger (stopped engaging also), it was because of a cracked switch housing. I took the column apart and wound up taking the whole switch out and replacing it. It was a few years ago so I really do not know the details of how it was held in but I think there might have been a couple of screws holding it down, and then it just slides up. The whole switch just plugs right in. I do not see why an 87 would be any different. I do not know about the cruise control though.

It engages when I hold the handle up real hard to turn right. but then the handle will just fall. I have to hold it up for it to work. I can't make it do that on the left turn nothing happens on the left turn. Well my truck is a standard so that is hard. My husband says don't worry about it because I live in Houston Texas and no one uses blinkers any way. Well he is right there but I won't drive it with that problem. And feel real stupid sticking my arm out the window to signal my turns. I really think it is just the handle but dont. know if you can change only hte handle. The handle feels really loose. It just sorta hangs there.
My switch did the same exact thing. You would have to hold the switch up for it to work. It turned out that the switch housing on mine was cracked and yours may be the same. Your switch should come off the same way mine does or similar. I think a new switch is around 80 dollars but I think I used one from an 83 mustang I had. It seems to work fine. You could try going to a salvage yard and pulling one your self off another ranger. That way if you break something its no big deal. Plus you'll be able to figure out how they come off with out wrecking your truck. I do know that the whole switch plugs in but I do not remember if any screws hold it down. I can go check a little later.

I agree with BOSS_358, looks like the mechanism is shot and a trip to the junk yard is called for.
Funny, I live in Rockford, IL and they dont use turn signals much up here either, or they signal when they are already into the turn, real useful that one, like saying "Im an idiot and heres further proof".
