Emissions test failure, ECM problems, what now?
1992 2.3 ranger with 175,000 failed emission test. Had to get exhaust manifold replaced since it was cracked. O2 sensor replaced, still failed. Mechanic says it's running way rich and computer seems confused as what to do. Exhaust readings are very erratic between 4 seperate readings. I queried the computer a month ago, and got strange readings. The mechanic also queried the computer a day ago and was also getting result codes about the truck not being in park, and other error codes relating to a auto transmission. <!?> I have a 5 speed! When this truck had 4,000 miles, the computer was replaced under a TSB since it would ping on regular gas but I cannot find more details about it. Is there a seperate ECM for auto and manual trucks? Seems to run OK to me. Mechanic is unable to locate an ECM to replace. Any ideas on where to get one?

Don't know about the ECM, but if your emissions are high, I would try cleaning the MAF sensor with a carb spray cleaner. Also make sure the EGR valve is functioning. With that many miles, it could be sticking from carbon deposits. Also make sure all 8 plugs are firing. If only one side is firing, or firing erratically, that would give high emissions, but the truck would still run OK. Be sure and disconnect a battery cable for about 15 minutes after doing any work on it, to force the ECM to reset parameters. Hope this gives you some ideas. Don
