Arming a Bronco

For those that live in states liberal enough where you can carry a handgun in your vehicle, I pose the question where do you keep yours?.. I built an "L" bracket with a Rubber covered peg on it that I installed on the drivers side inside the console. By popping the door open it is very easy to have your hand on it, and pulling back about 1/2" it is free of the peg. Here in the metro Atlanta area carjackings are very popular and I am to proud of my Bronco to hand it over to some scumbag without a fight. I am thinking of installing a teargas system with a timer but haven't had time to work out the system yet. Anyways has anyone else come up with a place to carry a piece.

I unfortunatly can not carry a handgun in the Brono legally! I do however carry an extendable baton that I keep in the driverside door. There is a spot right next to the seat at about my rib level that it fits perfectly in and alloys for easy access. If I lived in an area that allowed for firearms. I would attach a holster to the outside of the console bythe drivers seatbelt.

Instead of arming your rig with tear gas why not use some type of red smoke bombs if the rig has red smoke pouring out of it i cant think of any thief who would be stupid enough to try to get in or to wait for it to clear out.
Another possible solution is a quick kill switch similar to what the tractor pullers use but mount it in the dash board where you can pull it when you get out of the truck make it look like a **** so that it looks nice for the rest of the time it could also be pulled in a busy shopping mall as an anti theft device

If the states were liberal you would not be allowed to carry a handgun. However if they are conservative you would be allowed to carry a firearm. I'm a police officer and carry a handgun with me 99% of the time. If you can legally (And I stress LEGALLY!!) carry a firearm then keep it on your person. I wish more law abiding citizen could and would carry concealed firearms. It would make my job alot easier (we all are on the same team). Face it, criminals don't commit crimes when the police are present. The best place to keep a firearm is on your person, several reasons why. Never leave a firearm in your vehicle unattended because a bad guy is going to break into your Bronco and steal it. Then you have to worry about your firearm being used to kill another person. All you are doing at that point is helping arm the dirtbags that you detest and make gun owners look like idiots. When you get to your destination then you will have to transition the firearm from your hiding spot in the vehicle to your person. Bad news, someone will see you and call the cops thinking you are going to kill all of your co-workers. Just so you know the police will not be so nice to you at that point. Keep the firearm on your person and get a good quality holster. I can get to my firearm faster on my person then digging through my Bronco. Remember, never leave any firearm in your vehicle unattended, I cannot stress that enough. I've heard of two police officers that left their firearms in their vehicle and they were broken into and stolen. Just plan stupid!!! For those who cannot legally carry a firearm on their person make friends with a police officer. You may be able to have a gun under certain conditions of the law and your local police officer will know these little gray areas. A can of mace goes a long way and can easily be concealed in the storage area of your door. A batton will be hard to use when you are in the Bronco (No swinging room, trust me). If you do happen to keep your firearm in your Bronco keep it in a holster. This will prevent accidental discharge since the holster surronds the trigger and keeps a foreign object from setting it off. Please do not secure the firearm by placing a peg through the trigger guard for obvious reasons. Stay aware of your surroundings and keep the doors locked especially at intersections. In my area, the dirtbags will take your vehicle when you are either getting out of it or getting in. And for your sake, if you can legally carry a firearm and have legal justification for using it. By all means, make my job easier and a safer place for all of us.

Your right, with the baton, you have no room to swing it (extended). I mainly have it for the mrs. she works in Atlantic City as the night mamager of a bar. She has been through a couple of courses on self defense and can whip that thing out of the door and crack you in the nose before you can say "hey it's me". (I know from experience here, although it was my fault for kinda sneaking up on here like that.) A crack on the nose like that would give her PLENTY of time to get away WITH the car. She also carries pepper spray for walking through the parking lot.

NJbroncoXLT,

LOL, yes I myself have learned not to surprise the wife. The last thing I would want is that batton cracking me over the nose. Or should I say the nose I use to have because it would be knocked clean off.

This is where I ordered mine from. I went with an ASP baton but a couple of friends have ordered some of the cheaper ones and they are made pretty good too.

SproutW......Excellent post! I only wish I would of gotten here earlier to write the same thing.
For everyone else, check your local laws carefully. Here in Colorado, the vehical is considered an extension of your home, and you can have a firearm in it. But there are a lot of other details as to HOW you can have a firearm in your vehical. I too carry mine for work so it also goes with me when I am off duty and as SproutW said, keep it on your person. When I drive, my right arm is usually on the arm rest putting my hand near it anyway. Plus very few people even know I have it unless I happen to reach for my comb in my back pocket. Sometime you get a sideways look but most of the time, since the public is very assuming, they don't give it a second look. Taking it out of your vehical and placing on your person when you get out, well, I would automatically assume that someone is about to go postal unless I saw a badge.

Once again, nice write up SproutW.

But if you insist on mounting a holster for it in your vehical, try bolting one to the front left corner of the center console towards the bottom. Easy reach, but visible if you leave it behind.

I have twin Uzi's mounted behind the grill with custom 500 round hopper clips to keep them fed, there are solenoids mounted on the triggers so I can fire them with a push of a button on the dash. I also have an M-60 mounted on a cut-down tripod in the back that my passenger can man while I drive and work the Uzis. A bulletproof shield with a slot to fire through is mounted to a seperate rear window motor in the tailgate, and can be raised when taking fire. Dummy tailpipes house anti-tank missle launchers that can be reloaded through a door underneath the center console, while two more tailpipes are capable of releasing smoke, oil, or poison gas, depending on the circumstance. Then, of course, there is the nuclear warhead in its launcher mounted on the roof.

I don't know if it is legal or not. Nobody has ever pulled me over.

Dido for me. I used to live in CO where you can walk down the street with your handgun as long as it is visible. And if you want it concealed, you just need an available permit. Here in IL you can't even carry a gun and the ammunition in the same part of the car. (Ammo must be in the trunk, gun in cab, etc.) You have to get an Firearm owners ID to have a gun, buy ammunition etc. I went and got the form to get one and, I kid you not, one of the questions on the form was, "Are you mentally retarded." I wonder what would happen if you checked 'yes'. If people would just be responsible, we wouldn't have these problems. I wholeheartedly subscribe to the line of reasoning that says when people carry guns, crime goes down.

Billybob69 thanks for the kind words. I agree, the more law abiding gun owners the less violent crimes committed by the bad guys. I've never agreed with the principle lets punish the law abiding citizens. Some states are now requiring cough medicine to be sold only by a pharmacist and you have to sign a form. The reason: because meth heads are buying cough medcine and using it to make meth. Now really, why should I have to go to a pharamcist to get some simple cough medicine just because someone is using it improperly. Soon everyone is going to lose their rights to clean their house. Most cleaners could be used to make a bomb, much more deadly then a firearm. When will it end. I'll step off the soap box now and get back to Bronco questions, sorry.

I like the idea of arming the vehicle w/chemical agents. After the low life gets out of the vehicle puking and crying, call the local Police Dept. Too bad that the gas grenades are incendiary devices.

Don't remember about the later models, but if you've got the '78 or '9 model with bench seats (or a pickup, for that matter), Ford took care of you:
ol' slabsides, your basic 1911, will tuck right into the seat back bracket (just to your lefton the side of the bench as you're sitting behind the wheel) and ride there very securely.
I's particularly handy for southpaws like myself.
