Nearly each time I start my truck I get different readings and the tripometer miles to empty changes as well. Any other experience on this or advice on what to look for?
I also have a 99 v-10, the only difference I have seen is when I park either up a hill or down a hill. The gauge sending unit is apparently in the rear of the tank. Say if I have a 1/8th of a tank and I park up a hill it will show over a 1/4-1/2 when I start it the next time. Or it will show way empty if I park down hill. Maybe not your issue but thought I would put in my $.02.
To be honest, I'm not too sure where it is on the tank or if it's easily replaceble. I can check and see if it is in my hayes manual or not for you. I have just learned to get used to it, it has done it since new and I have 107K on it now and it's not that often I park on a hill. I kind of assumed it is normal since it makes sense that the sending unit must be in the rear of the tank(it's consistant). I will try to remember to check for you.
just bought my 01 250 and it has the same problem in reading the wrong amount. When I fill the tank it only shows 3/4 full and thats on flat ground. took it to the shop to have the sending unit replaced under warranty. the shop told me that the stock sending unit is **** and that even the new 05's off the dealership have the same problem. easy fix though just drop the gas tank and replace it witha new one.
I hope mine never takes a big S**T!! I have been lucky so far, mine only depends on where I park. I am assuming it is probably right near the fuel pump and the exit and return lines on top the tank. I keep forgetting to look in my manual, sorry.
the gas tank is on the driver side of the bed with the sending unit towards the the rear of the tank. when replacing the sender you have to take off the fuel pump as it is all one assembly unlike my mustang that has a seperate sending unit and fuel pump assembly
Unfortunately you have to drop the gas tank. Just make sure you are on empty to make things easier as the sending unit is on top off the fuel tank. Pretty easy just put a jack underneath the tank, loosen the straps, drop the tank, dissconnect the fuel line (need fuel line dissconnect tool), swap the sender, and put everthing back together. Looks like you have to get the sending from ford as I couldn't find it on any of the parts dealers websites. Hope this helps.
