A/C and heater problems-what next?

I have an '89 F-150 4wd, 302, automatic. My A/C started screaming about 2 months ago and I have discontinued use-good thing its winter. I do not use the truck very much (40-50 miles a week). I did not do anything to disconnect the compressor, just kept the switch off. Recently I tried to use the heater and of course you have to slide by the A/C locations on the controls in this model. No noise from the A/C compressor as I went by, but truck died when I stopped at 'Heat'. I left it on heat and tried to start. Started ok, but some new noises that sound like another pump or belt related item going out. As I switched between heat/defrost the truck died again. Started again ok. Noise continued. My temp guage reads fine. Radiator and heater coil are both new within the last year. Is there a pump in addition to the water pump that works with the heater? Some advice to steer me in the right direction would be great.

There's a valve that opens to allow water thru the heater core when selector is in heat mode but no other pump. The a/c compressor also turns on in defrost mode. I would suggest disconnecting power from the compressor clutches if you think the compressor may be toast. If your belt is in good shape and tight and the compressor is locking up it will definitly shut the engine off. Hope that helps. Carl

Could be a bad A/C compressor clutch, or even a seized compressor.

Thanks for the info. I do believe that the compressor clutch is shot. Could the valve controlling water to the heater coil also be bad? I noticed that after I restarted the heater was not blowing warm air.

I believe that valve is vacuume controlled. I'd check for leaks first. Carl
