Tranny Options
OK, it looks like the best course of action to deal with my ever-deteriorating input shaft bearing is to look for a used tranny from a wrecker and if necessary have it rebuilt. Meanwhile I can keep my truck on the road and just do a swap-over at an opportune moment.
Ideally I would get the same tranny, a toploader 4 speed OD but my question is, what other trannies would be an option for a direct swap. It's a 1982 f150 I6/300 and I want to keep the clutch non-hydraulic.

Those tranny's are junk. If you can find the good toploaders from the 60's and early 70's cars and ranchero's. They are a bolt in replacement (i have done this to my 82 flareside), but some floor pan cutting is involves and you will probably have to make a shifter handle which isn't hard to do.
