From what I can tell, the F-250 still had split shot injection, raising idle 100 RPM or more and there was a noticable change in the tone of the enging noise.
Well gee, of course the Ford did well on your tests then! Try measuring some newer ones, or old ones that have been reflashed and no longer have the split shot idle. For all the other problems it caused, the split shot injection made the engine *way* quieter than it is now. Ford says "it only got 3db louder" and I say "yeah right." At the very least it changed the nature of the sound to something more annoying, even if it's only 3db louder on a meter.
Tim, is it time for another decibel reading? Could you do that again?
For what it's worth, here's what I measured tonight, 62°F ambient. Mine has hood insulation. 2004 F250 CC 6.0 with one flash after stock. Running Rotella T 15W40 and Stanadyne, 100% stock truck (11/03 2004). The numbers are close to the previous measurements.
62 dB Inside cab at 70 MPH
48 dB Inside cab at idle
70 dB Drivers side @90° 25' away from front wheel
71 dB Front @0° 10' from blue oval This one sounds the best to me!
