I'm new here and I don't know if this subject has been posted or not. I have a '96 ford ranger. The odometer has quit working. The speedometer still works fine. I don't know where to start trying to fix this problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Odds are it's the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) located on top of the rear end. Double check to make sure you don't have a speedo cable comming out of your transmission; I think they went electronic back in 95. The VSS provides speed data used by the engine management systems, cruise, automatic transmission, and the speedometer. Fequently a failing VSS can/will selectively take out just one of the items it feeds data to. They cost about $15 - $20 and will take about 10 minutes to replace.
