Amp draw from the block heater.

I am curious as to what the amp draw is for my block heater so I can purchase the correct extension cord. It's a 99 if that helps any. I would hate to call the insurance man and tell him that my house and truck were burned up because I used a smaller gauge wire than needed. If I knew the wattage I would be able to answer this question on my own but I'm not sure what they came out with. I'm thinking I will use 12 gauge wire to be on the safe side but with the price of fuel where it is why spend it if you don't have to?

I researched it for you and learned that the Powerstroke block heater pulls 1500 watts. Using Ohm's law :

power = volts X current --- translation :

watts = volts X amps

1500 watts divided by 115 Volts AC = 13 Amps

Use a proper extension cord that can handle at least 15 amps. Also remember that your house outlets are rated at 15 amps.

Hope this helps you.

Also, click here for more info. If you are worried about your electric bill you can can always get a heavy duty electrical timer and set it to turn the block heater on 3-4 hours before you leave in the morning (or whenever you leave for work, etc.)
