Dent Removal

How would welding a washer to a dent with a mig welder work then use a slide hammer to pull on the washer?

Dent Removal

Well I took out a lerge part of that dent in my roof that was commecnted on. I need to do some hammer and dolly work to make it look better.
  • How do you relieve the stress in a large dent to keep it from wanting to pop back in? Mainly one of the large ones on my roof. I pushed a few of them out and they stay until I touch them then they pop back in. Would heating up the area with a heat gun work. I have one that will start wood one fire "yes it gets that hot".
  • I was looking at a stud welder for dent removal they are $200 for a decent cheap one. Would a washer welded on with a mig welder work? I have an area in the roof where the visor bolts in and I cannot get at it to push it out. I could use a slide hammer and a bolt but I hate to drill holes in the roof to have to weld back up anyway.
  • Is there an adapter to weld studs using my MIG welder? Seems like it would work fine if you could grip the stud.

Welding washers on edge with a mig welder and using a slide hammer to pull the dents out works well. Tack weld on one side of the washer, then twist the washers off and a quick grind when you are done with them. ...Terry

On the large panel dents mark where the edge of the dent is and use your hammer and dolly on the edge of the dent. A bit of trial and error and you'll notice the improvement right away. Sometimes you can't see the crease formed by the dent, but it's there.

If its severely stretched I understand heating and shrinking may be necessary. I've never had to go to that extreme.

I just got done redoing my truck and got all the dents out with a nail. Just found some old nails laying around the house and welded the tip of the nail to the center of the dent and pull it with a hammer. It worked very well, same idea as a washer but just wanted to give another option.

The roof of a 1950 Ford truck has a slight dome shape naturally. The dents that keep popping back are in that area and about 1/2" deep and 12" around. So if I use the dolly I should try flattening out the dent aroud the edges to stop middle from popping back in?

i use these in a pinch

i have used sheetrock screws when i have run out of pulling studs for the uni spotter . mig the heads of the screws to the dent. use a set of vise grips to hold the threaded end and pull the dent. just for grins i took an old dent puller the type that you drilled a hole for and removed the screw end i then welded a pair of vise grips to the end of the shaft . this works great for those stubborn dents , the vise grips give you the extra bite to hold on to the threads of the sheetrock screws and the slide hammer from the dent puller gives it just a little extra when you need it .
