I have a 71 f-250 longbed with a 390 on an automatic and I have 2 conversions in mind and need help finding the right parts. The 1st conversion I want to do is convert from and automatic to a 4 spd tranny, is this possible and what transmisson would I need? The second question I have is, what years interchange on these trucks. I would like to take a 4x4 front end and convert mine to 4 wheel drive, but I dont know what years interchange. I have swapped a 74 chevy 2wd front end on to a 61 chevy front end before, but this is the first ford I have owned (besides a mustang) and know very little about interchanging parts. Anyone who could help me with this please email me. thanks
The automatic to standard conversion can be easily done, providing you can find a truck complete with the proper bellhousing for your FE block, all clutch linkage parts, may as well change the steering column to get rid of the auto shifter mounting point, as well you'll need the floor pan that bolts on to cover the top of the transmission, shift boot, and probably the drive-shaft, or have yours shortened. Keep in mind, you'll have to very carefully cut into the firewall and create a mounting point for the clutch and appropriate linkage as well..not the easiest task, but do-able. As for converting to 4x4, nothings impossible, but it'd be much easier to just buy a 4x4.
If you have a 2wd with a nice body, the easiest thing for you to do is find a rusted out hulk 67 to 77 f250 4x4 and put your body on it. Your bed doesn't bolt on to the later frame, but it will fit with a little work. Most f250 4x4's of this era had 4 speeds. If the body on your 2wd isn't in really great shape it'd be more economical to just buy a nice 4x4. There are alot of 4x4 specific parts that aren't apparent at first: engine frame stands, steering column, radiator core support, radiator, speedometer cable, fe oil filter housing, 4 speed transmission floor cover, even the rubber shifter boot is different. In the NW it's not unusual to find a highboy with a beat body, but nice wheels, tires, axles and 4" lift kit for under $1500.
