I just had a new altenator put on my 2000 f-250 7.3 diesel and the volt meter is going crazy in it and the battery light comes on also I think it is the altenator but could it be one of the batteries I have 2 of them in it?
It starts ok and runs ok but at night with the lights on it looks like I am running a generator the lights get real bright and then dim down to normal???
Why did you replace the alternator? If it was doing the same symptoms before you changed the alt, then I would suspect you have a loose wire, or the regulator is not grounded properly.
I replaced the altenator because it wasnt working at all,I would jump start the truck and as soon as the charge went in the batteries it would stop running.
It has been a couple of weeks since I replaced the altenator and its been running and starting fine and it still does but the battery light and the battery volt meter is going crazy like it is overcharging the batteries.
I am going to replace the alt again tommorrow and see what that will do.
I'm sure you did this right, but I have to ask- did you recharge your batteries before replacing the alternator? Alternator manufacturers and Ford warn that if you install a new alternator into a vehicle with dead batteries and then jump start after the new alternator installation, you'll fry the new alternator and it will soon be a doorstop. A big doorstop.

The altenator was bad and a new one fixed the problem.
Also no the batteries were not recharged prior to installing the altenator so I guess this may have burned out the 1st new altenator I was unaware of recharging the batteries that is a good thing to now in case I have to do it again,Thanks for all your help.
