'97 X Rear Diff job
Hello again,
I just got my '97 X xlt (135,000 miles) out of the shop to get the rear diff completely overhauled. It cost me $990. Does that sound like robbery or is that fair? Just wanna know.

Sounds like robbery. Was it the Trac-Loc limited slip or regular open differential? The Ford/Dana Trac-Loc limited slip diff for the Ford 8.8 inch rear sells for less than $300. I can't imagine it would take that much labor to install it. What was the parts/labor breakdown on the invoice?

It was $599 for 9 hours of labor plus parts and tax. It was done at AAMCO...at first I thought it was the tranny (glad it wasn't). It sure beats the crap out of taking it to Ford to have it fixed...they really rob you. It is something that I most likely could have done myself but it would have taken me 3+ days to do it...they did it in less. I need my truck.
About the brother in law with the whining Diff...get it fixed! I've heard way too many horror stories about diff's seizing up while driving fast and killing people. The while rear end just blows up. Kinda scary!
