cast driveshaft weight

cast driveshaft weight
96 crew cab 4X4 rear driveshaft.
The rubber grommet that holds the cast iron weight onto a raised location on the driveshaft dissapeared. So I ended up with a heavy donut doing the twist on my driveshaft. So, it couldn't be driven. I took it to a welder to have it cut off, that's when he figured it to be cast iron. He ground it off. This was late last night and only drove a short distance but it feels OK. I'm going to need that replaced right? I'm guessing a whole shaft, or have it cut to have the weight put back on and reweld the shaft/get it balanced. I'm driving down to Seattle in a few days with it and think I'll be able to find a shaft in a junk yard there. Anyone ever have this happen--can it be driven without the weight?
