hey guys my names joe... i own a 94 f150 with a 302. i just replaced the timing cover but did not touch the timing gears. however i turned the crank while removing the vibration damper. now i try to start it and it just turns over. what can i do to get it timed? i dont have a timing light.
All things considered, what else did you change? Turning the crank while removing the harmonic balancer is some-what normal, as the bolt is a reverse thread. Bring your number one piston up to tdc on compression stroke, and make sure that the rotor is aimed at the right spark plug wire. If it's not something is a-miss. The harmonic balancer is key'd, so you can't install it wrong. Static timing should get the truck started, timing with a light is for fine tuning only, and can be done afterwards, if you can rent/borrow one, or take it to a shop to make sure. Number one cyl should be the front right(facing the engine) front left(sitting in the driver's seat) Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Did you change anything else at the same time? More info(even if it may be embarrassing) is good. We all make mistakes, and to correct this, admitting them just makes it easier to troubleshoot.
Thanks for the info. No i didnt change anything else. i did everything you guys said to. now it runs but the idle is off it pulsates. it starts fine it runs ok. but when it sits there it revs revs revs revs revs. it dosent stay steady. im thinking of replacing he throttle posistion sencer. or should i go to a shop to get it timed? thanks again.
