On the way home from work which is a 20 minute surface street drive, My 2004 6.0 started chugging up a hill an billowing white smoke out the pipe. It was dark, I think it was white.
The truck never died completely but could not run under its own power. The exhaust had an unusual foul smell.
I let it sit for 20 minutes and with my wife following me I limped into the dealer and left it in the lot. Ran better after sitting but still smoked and smelled terrible.
The truck has 12,500 miles on it. I ran an edge between miles 3,000 and 9,000 but took and left it off since the truck would occasionally act like it was out of fuel. It did this before the edge too. The dealer has always said everything is OK. Also had torqueshift solinoids replaced at 9,000 miles.

Any ideas?
Well, honestly, i'm not one of the more knowledgeable posters on the forum but due to the polluted emanation thereof your truck (thesaraus.com) i'm guessing you may have a bad cat. I can't believe you'd have problems with it so soon, though...
It's under factory warranty i suppose. Definetely see what the dealer has to say.
IMO, I think you are looking at a blown head gasket or a loss of compression due to a hole in a piston/skirt/ring ect. from heat; that is why I asked about a coolant/oil smell.
This is the exact same behavior as mine when I ripped out a wristpin from timing..
I do not recognize the smell. If it is coolant is is very burned and very obnoxious.
I never ran it hard. The edge was only on the lowest level and not on at all when I towed with it.
My gut instict is it is bad. I have luched big gasoline boat engines before but there is always a big bang and clanking etc. This came on at 40mph and 1700 (or so) RPM.
What year was your engine built? On your way to the dealer, did it shake violently at times? Dead pedal and then all of a sudden you had power? If so, could also be bad injector(s).
Picked it up tonight. They said the EGR valve was plugged. I did drive it home tonight and it ran OK. They also Flashed the PCM and TCM. That is giving me a huge lag time after hitting the gas pedal and getting a response and the shifts between 2nd and 3rd are very hard. It was too dark to check smoke although there was some on harder accelaration that I could see in the dark.
My Questions for the Diesel experts;
Does a plugged EGR sound logical for my symptoms? They said it was the source of all the smoke although they saw no smoke today?
Could more serious damage occured due to this plugged EGR? What caused all the foul smelling smoke?
If I am in the middle of nowhere and it happens again, should I just unplug the unit? (I know many of you already have done this).
Should I also have the exhaust back pressure sensor replaced?
Last but not least....Did the Edge fuel box create this problem?
I'm told, that in science, X is an unknown quantity and a "spurt" is a drip under pressure. Keeping in mind that I'm no "expert"; I keep my EGR valve unplugged all of the time except when I take the truck to the dealer for service.
I really don't have clue about what would happen if you unplugged the EGR after it was plugged up.
