I am considering replacing the factory muffler with a Flowmaster on my '99 F-150 4WD Off-road SuperCab (51,000 miles). I will leave all factory exhaust pipes (even the factory tailpipe) and converter in place. I am new to technology, so I am concerned about engine controls, malfunction codes, and engine performance. Will I cause any problems by doing this? The only thing that I am really expecting from this is a slight increase in sound, which is what I'm looking for. If there is any performance gain, that would be a bonus. I'm not putting duals on it for now because I want to keep the factory appearance for a little longer. Thanks.
Well what you are expecting is pretty much what you are going to get. The muffler won't cause any probs with your truck or any trouble codes. With the setup you are talking about, you will only get a sound change so no worries. Also, when you get around to doing the duals, check with a few different shops. If you are going to have a shop do it, they may be restricted like they are here in Colorado. Even with my old Bronco, they wouldn't do duals because it is not a factory configuration. (Supposedly state law).
Thanks, BillyBob69. After a little reading, I've become concerned about in-cab drone. I own vehicles that are dualed out, but they have so much wind noise that I've never noticed the drone. My new son will be spending several interstate miles in the truck, and I don't want to damage his hearing. I would like for him to avoid the hearing loss that I've experienced and not have to put up with 24-7-365 ear-ringing.
In my old Bronco, I switched out to a lower end muffler, (Golden Turbo from Mienike sp*) and it gave the truck a little rumble to it but the tires were still louder then the exhaust. There should be other options.
