I just picked up an 1988 ranger stx 4x4 extend-a-cab.
It has a 3" body lift with 31x10 tires on it.The engine is a 2.9 and is kinda doggish. What would be the biggest and easiest way to upgrade my lil engine? any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks Rich
Take off the oversize tires and remove the lift kit. Not the answer you want unless you want to install a V-8. Yea you could install a blower or some other device but you are maxxing out the motor. It's a Ranger not a full size. Even full size trucks don't respond well to heavy mods and a 3" lift with 31" tires is a serious mod.
It's not really a motor mod, but you could swap in some lower gears to compensate for the large tires you have on your truck. I don't know which ratio to suggest without your stock gear ratio and stock tire size--I'm just guessing, but I'd say somewhere around 4.88's...possibly??

Thanks for the input. Now if i were to go with a V-8 engine, what would be the best choice without a lot of mods? Also i noticed my fwd dont engage when i hit the button?? Where do i start to diagnos this problem? thanks again....... Rich
There have been several post about dropping a V8 in a Ranger in this forum for Rangers. Go ahead and check them out. You will be money ahead in my humble opinion to follow this option.
A number of things could be affecting your 4WD. I would check the front diff and see if your engager is workering there.
Your problem is that the 2.9 is a german spec mass density engine and dose not take mods too well.. but the good news is that 302's fit quite nicely...
